Thrifted Outfit Thursday - Prima Ballerina Edition

October 16, 2014

This is hands down one of my favorite outfits.  I don't wear it nearly as much as I'd like. While it can be dressy or casual an appropriate event is needed in order for me to pull it off.  Let's be honest, I can barely pull it off as is, and I'm certainly not wearing this to go yard sale-ing.  The skirt is a full tulle tea-length number (it hits about mid-calf) in a soft blush.  It sits at the waist and the layers of tulle give the illusion my waist is smaller than it really is (in spite of - ahem - having to take the skirt out a smidge to get it to fit).  I pair it with a black tank and pearls.  Relatively simple in concept, the skirt is so dramatic in itself it doesn't need to compete with much.

The skirt is so full, I had a hard time getting it all in the frame (my apologies for our duvet making it's way into the shot!).  But that's why I love it - it's full and feminine.  It makes a statement without being loud.

The pleats are graceful and soft; they are what make the skirt appear full without wearing a ton of layered fabric.  The tissue-tee fabric of the tank works to reinforce the overall softness of this outfit.  It's structured without being severe.  And now to transition to fall...

...I'm adding a plaid flannel shirt.  It's a little unexpected, contrasting the feminine look of the outfit.  Tying the flannel helps prevent any additional bulk while still maintaining a waist.  The best part - it still looks great with pearls!  As for shoes, you can definitely have fun with this outfit.  Keep it casual with a pair of black leather flip-flops in the summer, dress it up with heels (I've got a great pair of black & white polka dot peep-toe Mary Jane's that I love with this skirt!), ballet flats are always a no brainer (leopard print pointy-toed flats create a modern look), and in the cooler weather you can't go wrong with boots!  I love my red cowboy boots with this outfit, they keep it fun and like the Fall flannel are an unexpected detail.

With the exception of the plaid flannel shirt, every other item has been thrifted!

H&M Tulle Skirt - $6.49

Banana Republic tank - $3.99

Plaid flannel (on clearance from Target) - $11.00

Total Cost - just under $22.00
